The Substance
As much as I want to complete my reviews and give my two cents about all the award nominated films, I just can’t force myself to watch this in its entirety. From what I have seen, which is about 2/3rds, I pretty much figured out that the characters were not going to end up living happily ever after. Demi Moore is an aging Jane Fondaesque exercise guru who becomes a “Death Becomes Her” elixir client. Her need to remain young and relevant is severely compromised and the consequences become increasingly gruesome. I can see why Demi was chosen as the lead, she and Margaret Qualley, as Sue, are well paired. The most grotesque in this tale of be careful what you wish for is Dennis Quaid. He’s disgusting. For those of you who love the horror film genre, have at it. A full synopsis, including the ending, can be found on Wikipedia—-I don’t want those images running around in my head, so I’ll pass. Getting old ain’t for sissies. Rating: 2.25⭐️s
