If any of you saw Parasite, you know that Bong Joon Ho tends to make films that seem a bit off-kilter. Mickey 17 is off-kilter, off the planet, and weirdly satisfying the farther you get into this highly improbable story. Mickey is a schlub from Earth who gets into the wrong business and figures the only way he can avoid paying the ultimate price for his bad investments is to go to another planet being colonized. He signs up to be an expendable (should have read the fine print), who are used as human Guinea pigs to make the planet liveable under the questionable leadership of an authoritarian and his ever so lovely wife. The odds that an expendable will live more than a day or two are highly unlikely and a process of duplicating the deceased has been developed, sort of like 3D printing a human clone to start all over again and deal with the next virus, or human issue facing the colonists. What could go wrong? Robert Pattinson is brilliant as Mickey Barnes. He’s got experience as an immortal, but this is way different than Twilight and oddly relatable to things that are happening now. Mark Ruffalo and Toni Collette are the colony leader and his saucy wife, Steve Yuen - his best friend, and Naomi Ackie - girlfriend. It’s a science fiction black comedy and definitely worth a look.
