Definition of brutalist: relating to a style of building in which buildings are large and heavy-looking and often made of concrete. Knowing this definition is vital to understanding this film and the main character, Laszlo Toth, a Hungarian Jewish architect, post WWII. It’s out of the fire and into the frying pan covering Laszlo’s life in decades over 40 years and his struggle to re-establish his reputation through the apparent support of an unpredictable benefactor. Adrian Brody and Guy Pearce capture the essence of their respective characters earning their award nominations, Felicity Jones is Laszlo’s wife, Erzsebet, his reason for everything and how he keeps going through the highs and lows. Although it’s in color, I don’t think I’ve seen a film that Immediately made me think it was in black and white, and that’s after 3 1/2 hours. Strange, great soundtrack, cinematography is beautifully done, story illustrates the lack of freedom to pursue the 🇺🇸 American dream when someone is under the impression that money is power and can buy and control others.
